The Plot of The Movie
Ronnie Miller remained rebellious since the day her parents got divorced. Her father, Steve Miller, moved to Georgia three years ago after his divorce with Ronnie's mom. Ronnie had not spoken to her father ever since he had left them. She had a great talent playing classical piano and Julliard School had always interested her since she was young and now she refused to attend.
Steve had the chance to reconnect with his daughter when his wife, Kim, sent Ronnie and her younger brother, Jonah, to spend the summer with him. Steve, a former Julliard School professor and concert pianist, lived a quiet life in Tybee Island, a small beach town where he grew up, working on a glass window for the local church to replace the one the church lost in a fire. According to the locals, Steve accidentally set fire to the church one night.
Upon arrival, Ronnie was unhappy, harsh and defensive towards all those around her, including Will Blakelee who crashed into her during a volleyball match. She then met Blaze who lived with her boyfriend Marcus. Later on, Ronnie discovered a Loggerhead Sea Turtle nest at the beach near her house and while protecting it, she met Will again on his volunteer work for the aquarium. She discovered that Will was sincere and began to have feelings for him.
As Ronnie fell in love with Will, she also managed to have a better and stronger relationship with her father. Will invited her to his sister's wedding and they saw Marcus. Marcus said he wanted to take Ronnie with him which made Will frustrated and so the confrontation turned into a fight. Later that day, the turtle eggs hatched. Her father collapsed that evening. Ronnie immediately rushed Steve to a hospital and realized that he had been diagnosed with cancer long before her summer visit. She then wanted to spend more time with her father since he was unlikely to live much longer. At the same time, Ronnie and Will got into a confrontation because Will confessed that Marcus had actually set fire to the church, but Marcus had never confessed. Will left for college and there was no time to fix things up.
Steve worked on a piece of music for the church for a while. Fall came and Ronnie decided to stay behind to care of her father while Jonah went back to New York for the school year. She took care of her father and tried to make up for the three years of ignoring him. She continued working on his piece of music (titled "For Ronnie"), finishing what her father could not do because of his hands. When she finally played the chords, she realized that her father had finally died as he was listening to her playing the song.
At his funeral she stood up to make a speech. Then she played the piece of music that her father had written but never finished.
At the funeral, while Ronnie was talking to the attendants, she ran into Will. The two began to reconcile, but were not officially together again. At the end of the movie Ronnie told Will that she would be attending Julliard for the second semester. Will surprised Ronnie by telling her that he would be transferring to Columbia to be with her.
